Why is Cardamom so expensive

So, what’s the deal with Cardamom? 🌿

As the third most expensive spice in the world, green cardamom’s value goes far beyond its distinct aroma and flavor — it’s a reflection of the challenges behind every single pod.

Each pod is handpicked at about three-quarters ripeness — a delicate, time-intensive process that demands skilled labor and drives up production costs. Beyond this, in the past two years factors such as weather and pests also have played a significant role in influencing yield and quality.

In early 2024, erratic monsoons in India's key growing region of Kerala resulted in a 60–70% drop in yield, following a severe 120-day rainless period.

This caused extensive fungal root rot and lots of pest (thrips) outbreaks plus a delayed harvest that year.  Looking towards this year, even though the 2025 harvested just started, there is still an extreme shortage due to weather and therefore a very high price.

Meanwhile, the global demand keeps climbing.  Culinary and wellness trends, boosted by social media, have propelled cardamom into the spotlight — from traditional Middle Eastern and South Asian recipes to specialty coffee blends, premium spice mixes, and natural wellness products worldwide.
